Future Innovators Workshop

HKN Crest
Welcome to the Future Innovators Workshop!
This event is developed and hosted by students at the University of North Texas as members of the IEEE UNT Student Branch. We are excited to offer the opportunity to share our enthusiasm for electrical and computer engineering with future engineers through this completely free K-12 STEM outreach program. The goal of this event is to provide electronics kits to students and teach them about the wide world of electricity, circuits, and microcontrollers through hands-on projects. The Arduino electronics kits include:
  • Arduino Uno
  • Full-size breadboard
  • Ultrasonic sensor
  • TFT display
  • Jumper wires
  • Logic ICs
  • OpAmps
  • 555 timer IC
  • 7416 shift register
  • LEDs
  • IR LED receiver and transmitter
  • Resistors
  • Potentiometers
  • Photoresistors
  • Capacitors
  • Diodes
  • Audio cable and jack
  • Switches
  • Pushbuttons
  • Buzzer
  • 3D printed Arduino+breadboard sled
  • 2n2222 BJTs
  • 2n7000 MOSFET
The event itself introduces basic circuit and microcontroller concepts through an Arduino and basic circuit components. During the event, we will walk students through a complete project using the provided kits. After the event, students can access the Future Innovators Workshop Handbook (attached below) for future project ideas to allow for continual learning and development.

FIW Handbook
The FIW Handbook contains starter information on both circuit and Arduino basics. It introduces the concepts of voltage, resistance, current, and capacitance and how they are used in building circuits. The handbook tells you how to get started with Arduino and the Arduino IDE. Example projects are included and are ordered in difficulty from one-star to five-star and cover topics from LED basics to advanced Arduino programming.

Next Workshop
The next Future Innovators Workshop will be hosted in 2023. Read the announcement below for more information on the event and fill out the registration form.

Announcement
Hello parents and guardians!

We are proud to announce another virtual Future Innovator’s Workshop hosted by the IEEE UNT Student Branch and Eta Kappa Nu Lambda Zeta Chapter 2023! This completely free K-12 STEM outreach event provides your student with a free Arduino electronics kit mailed directly to you. Students are also given an introduction to microcontrollers and electronic circuits through an engaging one-hour workshop where the students will walk through a complete project using their kit.

Prior to the event, we will mail the full kit complete with an Arduino Uno and 34 other components (a total of 115+ pieces) to start your student’s journey into programming and electronics. Most importantly, this entire kit is completely FREE at no cost to you. Along with the kit, we will provide an online educational manual with a number of different projects to allow your student to continue learning well after the conclusion of the workshop.

Our workshops are divided into three classes: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Every student will receive the full kit of components, but the different workshop levels will be tailored based on the students’ prior experience. Example projects include the basics from a blinking LED and an electronic buzzer up to more complex projects such as an IR remote and advanced microcontroller programming.

The workshops will be held virtually in 2023. If you would like to sign your student up for this exciting free event, please fill out the form below. The kits will be mailed to the address provided in the form through USPS so that you will receive them within the week before the event. Emails will also be sent out to those registered the Monday before the event with instructions on how to join and prepare for the meeting. We only have 125 new registrant openings, so register soon before they all fill up!

If you have any questions at all, feel free to email me at cpbailey@ieee.org.

We hope to see you and your student soon!

Best Regards,

Colleen Bailey, IEEE STEM Ambassador
IEEE UNT Branch Counselor and HKN Lambda Zeta Chapter Faculty Advisor
